Walk: Skiddaw - Lonscale Fell, Skiddaw Little Man, Skiddaw, Bakestall, Great Calva
Start Point: Car park above Latrigg Grid Reference: NY 281 253
Distance: 12.2 (13.8)miles Ascent: 3,100 (3,800) feet
Time: 7 hours
Weather: A cold and very windy day with some snow on the North side of Skiddaw
Comments: Two distances and ascents are given as some of the group added Great Calva into the walk. An early diversion to Lonscale Fell added variety to the 'tourist' path. By the time we reached Skiddaw Little Man we could see that we were in for some cold and windy weather. The snow covering on the North side of Skiddaw was enough to allow for a quick descent. Whitewater Dash provided a sheltered spot for lunch but all too soon it was time to be on our way again. A group of us decided to add an extra Wainwright to the route - Great Calva. The 'more sensible' of the group continued on to Skiddaw House and enjoyed a long tea beak until we arrived. Then it was down the Glenderaterra Valley and back to the cars - only to find that the leader's car had a puncture! With three men in the car it wasn't long before the spare tyre was on and we were on our way (the lady in the group looked after all the contents of the boot - a most vital part of the proceedings!)

Scroll down to see photos of the walk

The mobility path is easily seen as we start the climb up the 'tourist' path . . .

which is a well-defined path but rather boring!

Much more interesting to head across a grassy path . . .

on our way to Lonscale Fell

From here we can check our route up to Little Man . . .

and Skiddaw - looks snowy up there

Time for a photo stop at the cairn on Lonscale Fell . . .

The cairn on the way to Little Man is a rather untidy looking affair

A rare appearance of the sun highlights Ullock Pike and Longside Edge

Nearer to the top we meet the snow we could see earlier . . .

though this clears a little as we approach the shelter . . .

behind which we find the trig point . . .

and the topograph . . .

which attracts everyone's attention

Then on down the snowy North side - anyone got a sledge?

A quick check of where we have been . . .

before reaching Bakestall . . .

from where there is a drop to Whitewater Dash . . .

where the groups hopes it will be lunch time

There's always one - doing it the hard way!

We'll just enjoy the waterfall as we eat lunch

A small group decides that Great Calva is too good an opportunity to miss . . .

but more ascent than we thought as we look back . . .

from Skiddaw House . . .

where the rest of the group waited for us

Now for the last section following the Cumbria Way . . .

down the Glenderaterra Valley . . .

and approaching Whit Beck we can see our initial path - anyone for another trip round?
