Walk: Mearley Brook, Little Mearley Hall, Angram Green, Hookcliffe, Lane Head, Clay House, Gerna, Hookliffe again, Radbrook, Worsaw End, Worston Brook and Worston.
Start Point: The Calf’s Head, Worston Grid Reference: SD 768 427
Distance: 5.5 miles Ascent: 645 feet
Time: 3.25 hours
Weather: Light rain/overcast
Comments: Forty two people and Ian, our leader, departed the village of Worston and headed in the general direction of Little Mearley Hall. Many participants of the walk attired themselves in various forms of Santa costume. The bright red costumes brightened up what was a dull damp day. Incidentally, it is reputed that the Santa costume colour was introduced by Coca Cola in an advertisement in the 1930s. Although we were in the heart of Pendle Witch country, no Witches could seen. It was either too wet and cold, or they were out numbered by the many Santa’s on the Santa Trail. Just imagine the collisions overhead between Santa Sleighs and Witches Broomsticks. Climbing gently we passed Angram Green and Hookcliffe before stopping for Coffee and taking the chance to exercise ones vocal chords by singing Christmas Carols. After the carols we moved on to Lane Head before descending a little to Clay House. Another gentle ascent took us past Gerna on the way back to Hookcliffe. From Hookcliffe we walked the last leg of the figure of eight walk by following the path to Radbrook and Worsaw End. We then followed Worston Brook down stream to arrive at The Calf’s Head. Here we enjoyed a splendid Christmas Lunch which was organised by Terry Jackson. There was plenty of mud but it was doubtful as to whether our leader should be awarded the Muddiest Walk trophy.
