Walk: Wanless Bridge, entrance to Mile Tunnel on Leeds-Liverpool Canal, Foulridge Lower Reservoir, other end of tunnel at Foulridge Wharf, County Brook Mill, Long Hill Farm, Holly Bush Farm and Slipper Hill Reservoir, Hollin Hall and Burnt House Farm.
Start Point: Cross Gaits Inn, Beverley Rd. Blacko Grid Reference: SD 866 414
Distance: 5.5 miles Ascent: 300 feet
Time: 3.25 hours
Weather: Warm and dry
Comments: An interesting, varied walk taken from "Beating the Bounds round Foulridge". The Mile Tunnel is the longest canal tunnel in the country. It is controlled by traffic lights (since 1963). The Leggers cottage is by the Wanless Bridge entrance. The canal was quite a hive of activity today and a cafe has recently opened at Foulridge Wharf. The towpath in this area is very well maintained. Between Long Hill Farm and Holly Bush Farm the footpath follows a sunken road which in wet weather becomes a river bed, not today though! There were good clear views all around. 29 ramblers enjoyed the walk and the excellent meal provided by the landlord of the Cross Gaits, who opened especially for us.
