Walk: South Hill, Higher Wheelton, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and Johnsonís Hillock Locks
Start Point: Malthouse Farm, Whittle-le-Woods Grid Reference: SD 591 203
Distance: 5.4 miles Ascent: 150 feet
Time: 2.5 hours
Weather: Sunny intervals and prolonged snow showers
Comments: 26 brave souls fearlessly faced the winter elements in Whittle-le-Woods and Wheelton. About an inch of snow was lying at the start of the walk with plenty of ice on side roads and pavements. The start of a prolonged snow shower led to the walk being curtailed; Withnell Fold and Wheelton were omitted from the route as we returned down the Leeds to Liverpool Canal. Great winter scenery.

A Canal Rover

It was fine as we set off . . .

on the Leeds Liverpool Canal

Higher Wheelton

They shall not pass!

Ramblers in the snow . . .

or a Winter Wonderland

About to rejoin the canal . . .

and a blizzard

A weak sun reappeared as we descended Johnson's Hillock Locks

Anyone seen an ice breaker

The lock overflow kept this pool ice free

Shouldn't these ducks be in the canal, not on it?

Approaching the end of the walk in Whittle Springs

Wasn't it just cosy back in the pub waiting for our meal
