Walk: From the Limestone Link, a gradual climb to Farleton Knott skirting the edge of Holmepark Fell. Gradual descent by quarry footpath to Townsend Farm and return to Holme by canal path.
Start Point: Smithy Inn, Holme Grid Reference: SD 524 789
Distance: 5.5 miles Ascent: 700 feet
Time: 3 hours
Weather: Dull, grey damp morning
Comments: Twenty five walkers set off on today’s walk anticipating a ‘wetting’ at some stage of the morning. We were fortunate as it stayed fine throughout except for the odd patch of drizzle which hardly wet us. After a gently start, along the canal path and over the motorway to the start of the Limestone Link path, we made a gradual ascent along the side of Holmepark Fell on a smooth, grassy footpath. The walk was more challenging today but, by letting some of the fitter members go on ahead at their own pace, the leader led from the rear so that she could keep an eye on the slower members. That’s her story and she’s sticking to it! Coffee was taken, by most members, just before the actual summit as there were plenty of rocks to sit on and the sun had come out briefly. All reached the top in their own time and felt really pleased with themselves as they were rewarded by splendid views to west, north and east. We had a gradual descent, coming across head high swathes of bracken which had miraculously appeared since the recce earlier in the year. Perhaps the shorts were not a good idea. We arrived back at the Fleece Inn where we had a private room and we all enjoyed a good lunch served very efficiently. Another good day, blessed with the weather.
