Walk: Cotterdale (twice), Hearne Coal road for Fossdale Moss, Great Shunner Fell & Tarn Hill for The High way.
Start Point: Thwaite Bridge Grid Reference: SD 824 923
Distance: 14.6 miles Ascent: 2,870 feet
Time: 7 hours
Weather: Overcast with some light rain in morning. Fairly strong cool winds on the top followed by warmer sunnier spells in the afternoon.
Comments: A relatively easy walk with the exception of the climb up Fossdale Moss, the climb being almost entirely on very soft spongy moss. By mid afternoon the walk could have been christened the Pheasant Walk as dozens of pheasant had by then been encountered.

Heading down to Cotterdale . . .

where a picturesque bridge is crossed . . .

before making use of a rather mundane one

Time to adjust the layers

No trotting around here - it was too boggy anyway!

Time for a rest after the steep climb . . .

and has John spotted an easier path?

Two minutes . . .

and it's time to leave Great Shunner Fell . . .

to head along the Pennine Way before turning off to . . .

descend into the valley . . .

where we spot a large flock of crows

Into the woods . . .

and quickly out again as most of the trees have been cut down

A small waterfall in . . .

Cotterdale Woods

Another bridge as we revisit Cotterdale . . .

a tiny hamlet with only a few houses

A reminder of a grim practice of the past

It's nearly the 12th you know!

Watch out for the sink hole!

Another reminder of past activity

Nearly back at the cars we spot a foal . . .

and its mother
