Walk: Glenridding Dodd, Sheffield Pike, White Stones, Stybarrow Dodd, Sticks Pass, Raise, Glenridding, Ullswater
Start Point: Lay-by behind Stybarrow Crag Grid Reference: NY 387 179
Distance: 10 miles Ascent: 3,050 feet
Time: 5.5 hours
Weather: A miserable cold day with extensive hill fog and snow showers above 600 metres.
Comments: Five walkers attended for this, the last two walk of 2010. The walk started well with good views of Ullswater from the summit of Glenridding Dodd, but, after this the weather deteriorated and the remaining summits were clothed in mist with frequent snow showers. With the weather showing no sign of improving it was decided to leave Swirral Edge for another day and descend via Glenridding Common through the Greenside Mine complex. At the mine the weather had marginally improved so we took the higher path on the south side of Glenridding Beck where we could enjoy the view down the valley towards Glenridding. However, the weather was determined to have the last word and the rain started again as we neared the cars. Not the best of days but still enjoyable nevertheless.

After climbing up beside Mossdale Beck we take a short pause at the wall . . .

before heading up to Glenridding Dodd . . .

from where we have a good view over Ullswater . . .

and Glenridding

Beginning the climb to Sheffield Pike we can see snow on the Helvellyn range . . .

and it looks like there is some mist ahead

The heather is covered by a dusting of snow . . .

but a monochrome world awaits us on Sheffield Pike . . .

where we find a sheltered spot . . .

for our coffee break

Appropriately named 'White Stones' . . .

but the conditions are no better on Stybarrow Dodd

However, there are some spectacular features . . .

with the snow build-up . . .

on the stones . . .

and on the grass

The conditions are no better on Raise . . .

so Ray decides to cut the walk short . . .

and head back down the valley . . .

past the weir . . .

and over Glenridding Beck . . .

where Glenridding Dodd . . .

and Sheffield Pike are back in view (no takers for another circuit!!!)
