Walk: Garburn Road for Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick, Thornthwaite Crag, Thornthwaite Mouth & Caudale Moor (Stoney Cove Pike), Pike How and St Raven`s Edge. At the cairn which overlooks Kirkstone pass we took the path for Broad End and A592. Crossing the road at Roundale Raise we headed for Idle Hill and Wansfell Pike with a final descent to the cars.
Start Point: Church Bridge, Troutbeck Grid Reference: NY 413 028
Distance: 13.5 miles Ascent: 4,150 feet
Time: 7 hours
Weather: Warm with light rain in the morning followed by a brief spell of sunshine mid afternoon, otherwise cloudy with light winds.
Comments: Mild weather plus light rain made the ascent to Thornthwaite Crag a warm walk. The rain was from high clouds but we still had good views of mist swirling and creeping in numerous patches in the valleys. By early afternoon the rain stopped and the sun made a brief appearance before disappearing once more. Ground conditions up until reaching the A592 had been reasonable with some boggy patches. However the path leading up to Wansfell was nothing less than wet, very wet or extremely wet. We might as well have been walking up a stream. All in all a good day but the car was very welcome to rest the weary limbs.
