Walk: Birks Fell, Old Cote Moor Top, Litton, Nether Hesleden, Foxup, Halton Gill, Horse Head Moor, Yockenthwaite, Cray, Buckden Rake
Start Point: Buckden car park Grid Reference: SD 942 773
Distance: 15.1 miles Ascent: 2,700 feet
Time: 6.75 hours
Weather: A mixed day with more dry bits than wet bits. Mist on fell tops and a cold wind on exposed ridges.
Comments: Four walkers attended for this walk, (the first grade two walk of 2012). The day started dry but as we climbed up Birks Fell we were soon enveloped in mist on Old Cote Moor Top. As we descended into Littondale we left the mist behind and the views improved. My concerns about crossing the ford in Litton proved unfounded, as the river was remarkably dry, considering all the snow melt. We took a roundabout route through Nether Hesleden and Foxup to Halton Gill before climbing to Horse Head Gate. The landscape in this area had a very wintry prospect with lots of snow patches and we were once again in mist. Descending Horse Head Moor we were thankful the wind was blowing on our backs. At Yockenthwaite we took the higher path above the woods to Cray. After crossing Cray Gill via the stepping stones we had another short climb to the Buckden Rake which we followed back to the cars.
