|Comments:||Eight jolly ramblers joined the leader today in Kirkby Stephen to make the climb to the Famous Nine Standards. Our route deviated from Wainwright’s Coast to Coast paths as we followed the footpaths up Ladthwaite Beck and on to Hartley Fell. As we approached the Standards the forecast low cloud descended and the famous land mark was hidden from view. This, however, cleared as we reached the top allowing some photographs. The next section of the route was across the open moorland of Winton Fell dodging peat bogs, becks, sikes and gills. Fortunately Les’ GPS kept us on track to follow Stowgill Sike which led to the planned waypoint at the top of the Shooters track on the East side of the Fell. A surprise treat as we descended from the fell was a Shooters Hut "Open for Lunch"! Our return route was by the single track road through Heggerscales and towards Winton where we joined the disused Railway line returning us to Kirkby Stephens before the rain!!|
