|Comments:||With a slightly delayed start we were hoping that the promised rain would clear early. Hope does not always work as light rain fell. With a promise of a stop at a cafe, although no-one believed a cafe existed, we walked along the lake shore ready to ascend Place Fell. The cafe does exist, see pictures, and we all enjoyed a nice coffee/tea break.
The ascent of Place Fell was in rain, the rain fortunately stopping as we reached the summit. On a day when temperatures had been forecast to reach 16deg (12 at the top), we were more than surprised when we were met by gale force winds. An alternative descent was required and along with the poor health of the leader, it was decided to cut short the walk and Angle Tarn Pikes was left for another day.
A dull start as we make our way . . .
along the lakeside path
This Common Chaffinch soon decided . . .
to take his leave
Hallin Fell comes into view - not on our route today
Is that a guilty look on John's face?
We were all happy that John had found . . .
a new cafe on the lakeside path . . .
so we all make sure that we get in the photo!
The cafe also has accommodation on the lower level
Looking back to Place Fell . . .
as we leave it behind
With such a strong wind we leave the main path and take advantage of the slightly sheltered grassy flanks of the fell
Deciding to cut the walk short we head down to Crookabeck . . .
where we find . . .
some unusual hens . . .
and very cute . . .
Two lambs look only hours old . . .
and have little jackets . . .
but a third lamb shows the difference in size
