Walk: Hyning Scout Wood, Moss House Farm, Crag Foot, Warton Crag and Strickland Wood
Start Point: George Washington, Warton, Carnforth Grid Reference: SD 498 723
Distance: 5.3 miles Ascent: 900 feet
Time: 3 hours
Weather: Brilliant Sunshine and calm
Comments:

Warton is the birthplace of the Medieval ancestors of George Washington, the first popularly elected President of the United States of America.

After days of high winds and rain the weather behaved itself and the group was bathed in sunlight for most of the walk.  Leaving the George Washington pub, the group headed for Hyning Scout Wood and then towards Leighton Moss.  At Crag Foot there was a disused chimney that probably had connections with the copper mining that took place in the locality.  (It is understood that the copper mines at Warton were worked between 1800 and 1830 by Cornish Miners when copper was scarce.  The copper ore was taken to the copper smelting works at Jenny Brown’s Point, which was built at the end of the 18th century.  The engines were sent by sea from North Wales.  Only the chimney now remains.  www.nmrs.org.uk. )  From Crag Foot began a gradual climb over Warton Crag to Coach Road before returning to the George Washington for a well-earned lunch.  Views of Leighton Moss and Morecambe Bay could be seen.  In Hyning Scout Wood a woodpecker could be heard in action, also there was the sound of birds awaiting spring.
