12 walkers set out from the West St car park and along Chew Lane to Higherland Bridge (170). We joined the towpath of the Leeds Liverpool canal heading along this route until we reached Thorlby swing bridge (174). Crossing the bridge we headed along a cart track to reach and cross the A65. A stroll along the country lane on the opposite side took us through the village of Thorlby. On with a little uphill road walking we eventually reached the crossroads in the village of Stirton where we had a coffee stop by the river. Following Bog Lane we had a steady climb for 1 mile which took us to a signposted Bridleway to Flasby. Out onto the fell we had a steady climb on the footpath which took us between Sharp Haw on our left and Rough Haw on our right, both summits were covered in mist and with a light rainfall there were no views today, just heads down and battle the weather. We carried on through the boulder strewn skirt of Rough Haw through the bracken track to find a shelter for lunch below a huge tree against a stone wall. After lunch we had a steep ravine crossing which was now a muddy slide, careful negotiation got us through and then it was down on a walled track into the village of Flasby. Crossing Flasby Beck and passing Flasby Grange Hall we turned left along the lane to take a stile right and an uphill climb across farmland. This eventually descended to a kissing gate and a road crossing Eshton Bridge. On past Eshton Hall to a T junction where a footpath following the main road took us all the way back to meet the Leeds Liverpool canal again where we turned right onto the towpath and a gentle stroll back to the Car Park at West St. A good days walk despite the damp weather.
