Walk: A Penwortham Playground, Avenham & Miller Parks, Frenchwood, Walton le Dale
Start Point: Hurst Grange Car Park, Hill Road, Penwortham Grid Reference: SD 524 280
Distance: 6 miles Ascent: 560 feet
Time: 3 hours
Weather: Mild for January, overcast with the sun trying very hard to make an appearance
Comments:
This longer than normal walk replaced a walk cancelled because of a pub closure.Leaving the start point the group first visited a riverside playground in Penwortham where they had the opportunity to try out some of the equipment.  After this excitement they then followed the River Ribble to Avenham Park and enjoyed the mince pies provided, before continuing to Frenchwood.  In Frenchwood the group passed the impressive offices of the former “Ribble Motor Services” offices (now Virgin Media).  Descending a steep path between allotments they then arrived on the banks of the Ribble before crossing the river bridge into Walton le Dale.  Leaving Victoria Road, (A6) the leader took the group along Winery Lane to the Old Tram Road before following old railway tracks to Leyland Road.  From there the route was via Finches Cottages and a network of footpaths to return to the start point with clean boots.  Along the way the leader gave out interesting information about the area.  Known by the leader’s captive audience as the “Boring Bits”.
