Walk: Greenhead Gill, Alcock Tarn, Bracken Fell, White Moss Common, The Coffin Route, Rydal Hall, Steps Wood, Rydal Caves, Deer Bolts Wood
Start Point: Grasmere, in lay-by on A591 Grid Reference: NY 338 084
Distance: 8.5 miles Ascent: 1,500 feet
Time: 5.5 hours
Weather:   A bright sunny start. Heavy showers in the afternoon

18 walkers set out from the lay-by and crossed over the A591 to take the track leading to Greenhead Gill where we commenced our steep climb, crossing the river where there is new bridge construction with limited access. Climbing upwards through the bracken pathways we eventually reached Alcock Tarn and a welcome coffee break. Following on over Bracken Fell we crossed White Moss Common to pick up The Coffin Route, where a spot for lunch was selected to shelter from the now heavy rain. Eventually a pathway dropped down to Rydal Hall to cross the A591 and into Steps Wood. Continuing another climb we passed Steps End and up to Rydal Caves. With the weather now closing in we continued along Loughrigg Terrace and increased the water proof clothing layers. Onwards through Deer Bolts Wood making our way towards  an exit onto Red Bank road which took us into Grasmere, then picking up Pye Lane we headed out to join the A591 and our lay-by start point.
