Walk: Buttermere and Fleetwith Pike
Start Point: Buttermere Village Grid Reference: NY 177 171
Distance: 6.5 miles Ascent: 1,700 feet
Time: 4 hours
Weather: Dry but with strong winds and rain around lunch time.

Buttermere was packed out with people and cars due to a 5 KM swim in Lake Buttermere.
Our initial walk was along Buttermere lake for an ascent of Fleetwith Pike by the direct route up the ridge. All was dry and progressing well until about three quarters of the way up and it started to rain. Not only did it rain, but contrary to forecast a strong wind blew up. As Fleetwith edge is exposed, we decided, sadly, that it was unsafe to continue.
Retracing our steps back down to return to Buttermere, we watched the tail end of the swimmers as they forced their way back, against the waves, to their starting point near Buttermere.
It had by now stopped raining, and the wind seemed to have dropped but sadly, due to the weather forecast of rain most of the day, I didn’t take a camera and hence there are no pictures.
