Comments:

2 walkers plus leader. A proposal to build on land west of Wingates will bring more housing close to Borsdane Wood and is one of a number of proposals to build on Green Belt land in Greater Manchester . Other proposals by the hotel at Haigh Hall would restrict the right to use some of the footpaths around the hall. Opponents of this proposal can sign an online petition.

On arrival at the Haigh Hall car park the weather looked grim

It seemed as if the world was seeking to discourage us

This former railway line cuts through the woodland. It could have been a great path

We debated whether this was just a cutting or part of a station or halt for Haigh Hall

Aspull Sough presumably drains a mine

The Whelley Loop line is a surfaced path and cycle way along old railways that served the collieries

Our coffee break was by a magnificent series of locks on the Leeds Liverpool Canal

View down the canal locks

We left the Leeds Liverpool Canal at Top Lock and crossed the Leigh branch

Lunch in Borsdane Wood

A worthy monument that commemorates the preservation of Borsdane Wood

Our walk finished by walking through the Haigh Hall woods
