South West Coastal Path

Minehead to Bideford

August 2008

Starting at Minehead the 630 mile long South West Coast path is Britainís longest waymarked trail. After completely encircling the coast of Cornwall, it continues along the south Devon coast and a final stretch along the Dorset coast leads to the end at South Haven Point on Poole Harbour.

This trail follows an extremely scenic coastline which is a natural haven for a wide range of beautiful wild flowers which naturally attract many species of butterfly.

Being a coast trail itís very easy to be mislead into thinking that this will be quite an easy walk when it is in fact very strenuous. A walker completing the whole trail will have climbed 115,000 feet, which is just a little short of walking the height of Mount Everest from sea level four times. Having now completed 450 miles of this trail it is interesting to reflect on how every day's walking has been quite different, and how the variety of scenery has been breathtaking.

There are beautiful beaches

There is rolling coastline covered in heather and bracken

There is green coastline

Rugged cliffs

Scenic views

Numerous coves which look almost tropical

Many fishing villages

And too many lighthouses to count

Whilst many set out to walk this trail from start to finish, when Karen first suggested we do this walk our approach was to split the length into manageable five or six day sections staying at B&Bís and self catering cottages at strategic points along the trail. In 2002 we walked our first stretch which was from Bideford to Boscastle, a total of 62 miles. In 2003 we walked from Boscastle to Perranporth, a total of 62 miles. In 2005 we went from Polmear to Wembury Beach, a total of 53 miles, and in August 2006 we walked from Perranporth to the Lizard which is 99 miles. It was in March 2007 when we decided it was time to see the map sculpture at the start of the trail, so this is when we walked the stretch from Minehead to Bideford a total distance of 80 miles.

In August 2008 we walked from Wembury Beach to Dawlish, a total distance of 88 miles, split over 6 days.
